Bamboo Sofa Set, Cane and Rattan Sofa Designs

Cane, bamboo, rattan and wicker sofa sets with care and cushion tips

  • Updated 2 Nov

A bamboo sofa set or a cane sofa set gives you a light, airy seat that stays cool in Indian summers and can be lifted by one person. These natural fibre sofas suit verandas, balconies, holiday homes and living rooms that want a relaxed, earthy look.

Cane and rattan are not the same as bamboo. Rattan is a climbing palm, and cane is its stem or peeled skin used for weaving. Bamboo is a hollow grass with knots, called nodes, along its poles. Wicker is the weave itself, which can be cane, willow or a plastic strand.

Read the care guide first, because humidity decides how long these sofas last. Then browse 9 original designs. For hard wearing balcony seats, also see outdoor sofa sets and the plastic sofa set page.

Bamboo Sofa Set and Cane Care in Humid Weather

  • Monsoon: natural cane and bamboo soak up moisture and can grow white mould. On damp days switch on a ceiling fan and pull the set a few inches forward, off the wall.
  • Cleaning: dust with a soft brush, then wipe with a cloth dipped in mild soap water and squeezed dry. Let it air dry in shade, not hard sun.
  • Dry winters and AC rooms: cane can crack when the air is very dry. A light wipe with a damp cloth once a month helps.
  • Borers: tiny holes with fine powder below mean insects. Treat early with a borer solution from a hardware store.
  • Coating: ask for a clear lacquer or PU coat at the time of purchase. Recoat when it looks dull.

Cushions and Sizes for Cane Sofas

Cane and bamboo frames are springy, so comfort depends on cushions.

Cane Sofa Set for Living Room Use

Indoors, a cane sofa design usually has a wooden or thick cane frame with woven panels in the back and arms. Thick cushions make it a proper daily sofa, not just a show piece.

Wooden cane sofa set with teak frame and woven back panels
Seats
3+1+1
Build
Teak frame, cane, cotton
Fits
12 x 13 ft hall

A teak frame holds tight woven cane panels in the back and sides. The wood takes the load and the cane lets air flow, so your back does not sweat in summer.

Maker's note: Ask for cane panels fixed in grooves with beading so a torn panel can be swapped.

Modern cane sofa set with curved arms and sage green cushions
Seats
3 seater
Build
Rattan core, cane wrap
Fits
10 x 12 ft hall

Tight cane wraps the curved arms, and the back sits low, so this modern cane sofa set feels soft and rounded. Sage cushions suit white and wooden rooms.

Maker's note: Seat cushions should be 4 to 5 inches thick HR foam, as cane seats alone feel hard.

Cane furniture sofa set with honey finish in a plant filled hall
Seats
3+2
Build
Cane, honey lacquer
Fits
13 x 14 ft hall

A honey toned cane furniture sofa set with diamond weave backs. With plants and a cotton rug it gives a living room sofa cane furniture look that is easy to keep cool.

Maker's note: Ask for a clear lacquer coat on cane; it slows down drying and keeps out monsoon mould.

Bamboo Sofa Set Design Ideas

A bamboo sofa set uses whole poles for the legs and arms, so you can see the nodes. Bamboo must be treated against borers, small insects that turn it to powder.

Bamboo sofa set design with thick poles and white cushions
Seats
3 seater
Build
Treated bamboo, cotton
Fits
Sit out or veranda

Thick bamboo poles form the arms and legs, joined with pegs and lashing. White cushions and a pale wall keep the look simple and fresh.

Maker's note: Confirm the bamboo is borax treated and ask for pegged joints with lashing, not only nails.

Modern bamboo sofa set with split slat back and charcoal seat
Seats
3+1+1
Build
Bamboo slats, poly blend
Fits
11 x 12 ft hall

A modern bamboo sofa set made from split slats laid side by side. The flat slats make a clean back, and charcoal cushions give contrast to the light bamboo.

Maker's note: Split bamboo should be pressed and glued, then sealed with PU so it does not splinter.

Bamboo cane sofa set on a city balcony with striped cushions
Seats
2 seater
Build
Bamboo, cane, cotton
Fits
4 ft deep balcony

Bamboo frame with cane woven seat panels sized for a 4 ft deep balcony. The 2 seater leaves room for a small stool and some pots.

Maker's note: Measure your balcony depth and keep the sofa no deeper than 28 inches for a narrow space.

Rattan Sofa Set, Wicker and Jute Options

For open balconies, a synthetic rattan sofa set made from PE wicker strands handles sun and rain better than natural cane. Indoors, a jute sofa set brings the same earthy feel through fabric.

Grey rattan sofa set indoor and balcony use with cream cushions
Seats

Build
PE wicker, aluminium
Fits
Open terrace

Grey synthetic rattan over an aluminium frame works as a rattan sofa set indoor or on an open terrace. It does not rot, and it wipes clean with soap water.

Maker's note: Ask for UV stable PE wicker and quick dry foam so cushions do not hold rain water.

Natural wicker sofa set with round back and tan cushions
Seats
2+1
Build
Cane wicker, cotton
Fits
Bedroom corner

A round back wicker sofa set in natural cane with a matching side chair. The curved shape suits a reading corner or a bedroom sit out.

Maker's note: Keep wicker away from AC vents and direct sun; very dry air makes cane brittle.

Jute sofa set 3+1 with natural jute fabric and wooden legs
Seats
3+1
Build
Wood, jute fabric
Fits
11 x 12 ft hall

This 3+1 uses jute fabric sofa set upholstery on a wooden frame. Jute has a rough, rustic feel and pairs well with cane chairs in the same room.

Maker's note: Pure jute is scratchy and stains, so ask for a jute and cotton blend with a stain guard.

Questions buyers ask

Is a bamboo sofa set strong enough for daily use?

Yes, if the bamboo is mature, treated and well joined. Thick poles with pegged joints can hold three adults easily. Thin, untreated bamboo can split or get borers within a year or two.

What is the difference between cane, rattan and wicker?

Rattan is a climbing palm. Cane is its stem or the thin skin peeled from it and used for weaving. Wicker is the weaving style, which can be done in cane, willow or plastic strands.

Can I keep a cane sofa set on an open balcony?

Natural cane fades and grows mould in rain and strong sun. On an open balcony choose synthetic PE rattan on an aluminium frame. Natural cane is fine on a covered balcony or veranda.

How do I remove white mould from a cane sofa?

Brush off the loose mould outdoors, then wipe with a cloth dipped in mild soap water or diluted vinegar. Dry it fully in shade with good air flow. Recoat with lacquer once it is dry.

Is a jute sofa set comfortable?

Jute fabric is rough to the touch and can feel scratchy on bare arms. A jute and cotton blend is softer. Use it for its earthy look, and add soft cushions in cotton or linen.

Is a cane sofa cheaper than a wooden sofa?

Usually a simple cane or bamboo sofa costs less than a solid wood sofa. Fine weaving, a teak frame or synthetic rattan with aluminium can push the cost up to match wooden sets.
