A wooden sofa set has a visible frame of solid wood or plywood with loose or fixed cushions, and it is still the most common sofa in Indian homes because a local carpenter can build, repair and repolish it for decades. This page is the starting point for every wooden sofa design on the site.
The big choices are the wood (teak, sheesham, mango, rubberwood or engineered ply), the style (carved, plain, modern) and the polish. Teak lasts longest and resists damp and termites. Sheesham is hard with a dark streaky grain. Mango and rubberwood keep the budget lower but need treatment.
Scroll the wooden sofa set designs photo gallery below, then use the guide on wood, polish and joinery. Each section links to a deeper page, from teak wood sofa sets to carving sofa designs.
Teak Wooden Sofa Set Design
Teak (sagwan) is golden brown, oily and heavy. It is the costliest common wood and the safest for humid cities. See more on sagwan sofa set and Kerala teak sofa pages.

- Build
- Teak, clear PU

Wood Types for a Wooden Sofa Set
| Wood | Look | Strength | Care |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teak (sagwan) | Golden brown | Very strong, resists damp and termites | Low |
| Sheesham | Dark streaky grain | Hard | Must be seasoned |
| Mango | Light brown | Medium | Borer treatment |
| Rubberwood | Pale | Medium | Borer treatment |
| Plywood | Veneer or laminate | Good if BWR/BWP | Keep dry |
See plywood sofa design for engineered options and plastic sofa sets or steel sofas for non wood choices.
Polish Types
- PU: tough, glossy or matte, resists water rings.
- Melamine: cheaper, less durable.
- Duco: opaque paint finish in any colour.
- Oil or wax: natural look, easy to touch up.
Termite Care
Teak resists termites. Other woods need treatment before polish. Leave a hand span gap between sofa and wall, check for mud tubes and fine powder each season, and call pest control at the first sign.
In monsoon, lift the sofa onto rubber leg caps so the feet do not soak up floor damp. Damp wood draws termites and also swells the joints.
Sizes and Matching Tables
Use these as a starting point when you ask a carpenter for any furniture wooden sofa design. Sizes vary by model.
| Piece | Usual length | Seat height |
|---|---|---|
| 3 seater | About 72 to 90 inches | 16 to 19 inches |
| 2 seater | About 54 to 66 inches | 16 to 19 inches |
| Single chair | About 30 to 40 inches | 16 to 19 inches |
For a sofa tea table design, wooden with glass top, size the table near two thirds of the sofa length and park it a forearm away; 14 to 18 inches is the comfortable band. Many new model wooden sofa set designs come with a matching table; see sofa centre table ideas.
How to Check Joinery
Turn the sofa over. Good frames are joined by mortise and tenon or by dowels, with corner blocks glued in. Nails and staples alone loosen fast. Press the arms; there should be no wobble.
Questions buyers ask
Which timber should I pick for a wooden sofa set?
Teak wins on almost every count since damp and termites leave it alone. Sheesham is strong and good value if seasoned well. Mango and rubberwood need treatment.
Is a wooden sofa set comfortable?
Yes, when the cushions are right. Seats want HR foam at 32 kg/m³ minimum, and the back should lean about 100 to 105 degrees.
How do I clean a wooden sofa design?
Dust with a dry cloth, wipe spills at once and avoid wet mops near legs. Re polish every few years.
Are simple wooden sofa set designs cheaper?
Yes. Plain frames take fewer carpenter hours than carved ones. The wood type still decides the bulk of the cost.
Will a local carpenter copy a sofa from a picture?
Yes. Show the photo, give seat height, depth and length, and confirm wood and polish in writing. A good sofa wooden design sketch with measurements saves arguments later. Ask to see the frame before upholstery goes on.
What is the best wooden sofa for a hall in humid weather?
Teak with PU polish holds up best. Keep it off damp floors with leg caps. Sheesham also works if it was seasoned properly before the carpenter cut it. Avoid unsealed plywood near a wet balcony door.
