Plywood Sofa Design: Simple, Storage and Built In Ideas

Ply and laminate sofas: simple, storage, corner and built in designs

  • 9 designs
  • Ply grade guide
  • Updated 2 Nov

A plywood sofa design uses sheets of plywood for the base, sides and back, finished with laminate, veneer or fabric, and topped with foam cushions. Carpenters like ply because it comes in large flat sheets, so boxy shapes, drawers and built in corners are quick to make.

Below are 9 original plywood sofa set images: simple laminate sofas, sofas with storage boxes and cupboards, and corner sofas built into the wall. After the first gallery is a plain guide to ply grades. Ask for the right grade, because cheap ply is the reason many sofas sag or swell within a few years.

If you want a sofa with loose solid wood arms instead, compare the lakdi sofa design page. For more drawer and lift up ideas, see sofa with storage.

01

Simple Plywood Sofa Design with Laminate

A simple plywood sofa design is a ply box with a cushion on top and a padded or laminate back. It is easy to clean below and costs less than solid wood.

Simple plywood sofa design in walnut laminate with grey cushions
Seats
3 seater
Build
BWR ply, laminate
Fits
10 x 11 ft hall

A 3 seater ply box in walnut laminate with straight arms and grey cushions. Clean edges and a recessed plinth make it look neat in a small hall.

Maker's note: Specify 18 mm BWR grade ply and edge banding on all visible edges to prevent chips.

2 seater
Build
BWR ply, gloss laminate
Fits
1 BHK hall

White gloss laminate keeps a small room bright. Navy cushions give contrast, and the gloss wipes clean with a damp cloth.

Maker's note: Gloss laminate shows scratches; ask for a matte finish on the arm tops where cups rest.

Plywood sofa design images simple with oak veneer and tapered legs
Seats
3 seater
Build
Ply, oak veneer, PU
Fits
11 x 12 ft hall

Oak veneer over ply looks like solid wood, and short tapered legs lift the sofa off the floor. It suits a modern room where you want a light frame.

Maker's note: Veneer needs PU polish to resist water rings; ask for a matte coat on all faces.

Ply Grades for a Plywood Sofa Frame Design

GradeWhat it meansUse in a sofa
MRMoisture resistant, for dry interiorsOnly for dry rooms and light inner panels
BWRBoiling water resistantGood for sofa frames and bases
BWP or marineBoiling water proofGround floor, damp walls, coastal homes
MDFPressed wood fibre boardOnly non structural panels, never the frame

Use 18 mm or 19 mm ply for the base and arms, and 12 mm for inner divisions. Thin 6 mm sheets are only for drawer bottoms.

Frame Tips to Tell Your Carpenter

  • Fix solid wood battens inside every corner, then screw and glue the ply to them.
  • Seat boards need cross supports every 18 to 20 inches, or they will sag.
  • Seal all cut edges with edge banding or polish, because raw edges soak up damp.
  • Raise the base on legs or a plinth so you can mop below.
  • Seat cushions: HR grade, never under 32 kg/m³.

To compare with metal frames, see steel sofa sets.

Plywood Sofa with Storage and Cupboard Design

A plywood sofa with storage design turns the seat base into drawers or lift up boxes. A cupboard sofa design adds shelves or shutters in the arms, which helps in small flats.

BWR ply, laminate
Fits
Living room or study

Two wide drawers under the seat hold bedsheets and quilts. The drawers run on full extension channels so you can reach the back.

Maker's note: Ask for soft close channels rated for at least 35 kg per drawer.

Cupboard sofa design with shelves and shutters in both arms
Seats
3 seater
Build
Ply, matte laminate
Fits
10 x 10 ft room

Each arm is a small cupboard with a shutter on the front and an open shelf on top. It replaces two side tables in a narrow room.

Maker's note: Make the arms 15 inches wide so a cupboard is usable; narrower arms only hold magazines.

Plywood sofa set design in L shape with lift up storage seats
Seats
5 seater L shape
Build
BWR ply, fabric
Fits
12 x 12 ft hall

The seat boards lift up on hinges to reveal deep storage boxes. The L shape seats five and hides out of season clothes.

Maker's note: Use gas lift hinges on lift up seats so the lid stays open on its own.

Built In Plywood Sofa and Headboard Panel Ideas

Built in sofas are fixed to the wall, so they use every inch of a corner or bay window. A padded wall panel behind, like a sofa headboard design, replaces loose back cushions.

Bay window corner

A ply corner seat built into a bay window, with drawers below. It turns a wasted window corner into seating for four.

Maker's note: Near windows use BWP ply and keep the unit an inch clear of the wall so air moves.

Ply base, fabric panel

Narrow hall

A tall padded panel fixed on the wall works as the sofa back. The ply sofa below has only a seat, which saves depth in a narrow room.

Maker's note: Fix the padded panel on a ply backing with screws into the wall, not just glue.

Plywood sofa design latest with curved ends and fluted base
Seats
3 seater
Build
Bent ply, fluted veneer
Fits
12 x 13 ft hall

Bent ply curves at the ends and a fluted panel along the base give this latest plywood sofa design a soft, modern look.

Maker's note: Curved ends need flexible ply; ask the carpenter if he has bent ply before.

Questions buyers ask

Is a plywood sofa strong enough for daily use?

Yes, if it is made with BWR or BWP ply, wooden battens at the corners and proper cross supports. A sofa of thin MR ply or MDF can bend and swell. Ask the grade and thickness in writing.

Which sofa design, plywood or solid wood, is stronger?

Solid wood is stronger at joints and can be carved and repolished. Plywood is better for flat, boxy designs, drawers and built in units. Many good sofas use both: ply panels with solid wood frames inside.

What finish should I put on a ply sofa design?

Laminate is the toughest and easiest to clean. Veneer with PU looks like real wood. Fabric covering is softest. Avoid paint on raw ply edges, because it peels in humid weather.

How deep should a built in plywood sofa be?

Keep the seat about 20 to 24 inches deep and the total depth about 30 to 36 inches with back cushions. If a padded wall panel is the back, the base can be only about 24 to 26 inches deep.

Can a plywood sofa set be moved when I shift house?

A free standing ply sofa can be moved, but large boxes are heavy. Ask for it in two or three parts joined with bolts. Built in sofas fixed to walls usually stay behind.

How do I keep termites away from a plywood sofa?

Buy ply with anti termite treatment and seal all edges. Keep the sofa off damp floors and walls. If you see mud lines on the wall, call pest control at once.
