A teak wood sofa set is built from sagwan, the golden brown hardwood with natural oils that keep out damp and termites, which is why it lasts for generations in Indian homes. It is heavy, holds screws and joints tightly and takes polish evenly.
Because teak costs the most of the common woods, sellers sometimes mix it with cheaper timber or sell teak veneer on plywood as solid teak. The guide below the gallery shows how to check an original teak wood sofa set by grain, weight, smell and the underside.

Original Teak Wood Sofa Set Designs

- Build
- Teak, satin PU
- Fits
- 10 x 11 ft hall
A gently curved back rail softens the look. Two seater plus one chair suits a 10 ft wide hall.
Maker's note: Curved rails should be cut from one wide plank, not steam bent pine.

- Build
- Teak, walnut tone

Thick block arms show how solid the timber is. Deep 24 inch seats for long sitting.
Maker's note: Heavy sets need floor protectors; ask for felt pads under each leg.
Teak Sofa With Cushions
Cushion choice decides comfort. Seats need firm HR foam, 32 kg/m³ upward; back cushions stay softer, somewhere between 20 and 28 kg/m³.

Indigo cotton covers with white piping. Zips on all sides for washing.
Maker's note: Ask for zip covers and a spare set for monsoon.

Maker's note: Tie tapes keep back cushions from slipping down the slats.
Carved Teak Sofa Designs
Carved teak holds fine detail because the grain is close and oily. See carving sofa set for more.

- Seats
- 3+1+1
- Build
- Teak, walnut PU
- Fits
- 14 x 16 ft hall
Leaves and vines are cut along the crest rail and the arm panels, with a walnut polish to pick out the depth.
Maker's note: Ask for carving depth and see a sample panel first.

- Seats
- 3+1+1
- Build
- Teak, dark PU
- Fits
- 14 x 15 ft hall
Claw feet and scroll arms give a classic look. Suits large drawing rooms.
Maker's note: Claw feet need extra width; leave room for the feet in your measurements.

- Seats
- 3 seater
- Build
- Teak, honey PU
- Fits
- 11 x 12 ft hall
Carving only on arm panels keeps the cost and dust down.
Maker's note: Shallow carving on outer faces alone means less dusting.
Modern Teak Wood Sofa Design and Corner Sets
A modern teak wood sofa design uses slim frames and tapered legs. A simple teak wood sofa design for a corner seats 5 or 6.

- Seats
- 3 seater
- Build
- Teak, clear PU
- Fits
- 10 x 12 ft hall
The seat floats inside a slim teak frame. Low and clean for a modern flat.
Maker's note: Slim frames need mortise and tenon joints with corner blocks.

- Seats
- 6 seats, LHS
- Build
- Teak, olive cotton
- Fits
- 12 x 14 ft hall
A teak corner for six, about 8 x 6 ft. Flat arms at each end.
Maker's note: Corner pieces should bolt together so you can move them in parts.

- Seats
- 4 seats, RHS
- Build
- Teak, cream cotton
- Fits
- 9 x 11 ft room
A simple four seat corner in teak with a short side. Fits small rooms.
Maker's note: Even a tight corner should give each seat 22 inches of depth.
How to Tell Real Teak
- Grain: straight, close and golden brown, sometimes with dark streaks.
- Weight: heavy; lift one end and compare with a pine sofa.
- Oil: unpolished teak feels slightly oily and smells leathery.
- Underside: look under the seat; the inside rails should also be teak, not ply.
Teak Grades and Polish
Heartwood from mature trees is darker, denser and more stable. Sapwood is paler and weaker. Plantation teak is younger and lighter in colour. Polish choice: PU for tough use, oil or wax for a natural look that is easy to touch up.

Ordering a Sofa Set Teak Wood Made by a Carpenter
Bring a picture of the teakwood sofa set design you like, then fix these points in writing before any wood is cut:
- Wood: teak heartwood for all frame parts, not just the visible faces.
- Sizes: a 3 seater is usually 78 to 84 inches long, seat height 16 to 19 inches, seat depth 20 to 24 inches.
- Joints: mortise and tenon or dowel with glued corner blocks.
- Polish: PU matte, satin or gloss, or natural oil.
- Foam: seat cushions in HR grade, 32 kg/m³ for most, 35 to 40 for heavy users.
Visit once when the frame is ready and before polish, so you can check joints and grain.
Questions buyers ask
How do I know a teak wood sofa set is original?
Check the grain, the weight, the oily feel and the underside, where cheaper rails often hide. Scratch a hidden spot with a fingernail; teak shows a golden colour under the polish. Ask for a bill that names teak for every part, including inner rails.
Is teak better than sheesham for a sofa?
Teak resists damp and termites better and moves less when humidity changes. Sheesham is harder, darker and good value if it was seasoned properly. In coastal and very humid homes, teak is the safer pick.
What polish is best on a teak sofa?
PU in matte or satin is best for daily family use because it resists water rings and scratches. Oil or wax shows the grain best and small marks rub out, though it wants a new coat every 6 to 12 months. Avoid thick glossy melamine, which hides the grain.
Does a teak sofa need termite treatment?
Mature teak heartwood resists termites on its own. Sapwood, plantation teak and any mixed timber in the frame still need treatment before polish. Ask the carpenter to treat the inner rails anyway; it costs little.
What pushes a teak sofa above other woods in cost?
Teak grows slowly, is heavy to move and is in demand for doors and boats too. Carving, thick sections, heartwood grade and size all push the cost up further. A veneer finish on plywood costs far less but is not solid teak.
Can I get an old teak sofa repolished instead of buying new?
Yes. A carpenter can strip the old polish, fix loose joints with fresh glue and dowels, and apply new PU or oil. Teak usually comes back looking close to new, and new cushions finish the job.
