Fabric Sofa Set Guide: Choosing Sofa Cloth That Lasts

Sofa cloth types, rub counts, colours and how many metres to buy

  • Updated 2 Nov

A fabric sofa set is cooler to sit on than leather in Indian summers, comes in far more colours, and can be re-covered when it wears instead of thrown out. The right sofa kapda (sofa cloth) depends on three things: who sits on it, how much dust and humidity your home gets, and how much cleaning you are ready to do.

This guide starts with a fabric comparison table, rub counts and how many metres to buy, then shows nine sofa cloth design examples. For colour ideas by shade, see our sofa colour combination hub, and for leather options read leather sofa set.

Best Fabric for a Sofa Set: Comparison Table

Use this table to match sofa set cloth material to your home. Feel and wear are rated for daily family use.

For most families, a polyester weave or chenille with a stain guard finish is the best fabric for sofa set use. Velvet is the luxury choice; linen and cotton suit hot, humid coastal homes.

Rub Count: How Strong Should Sofa Fabric Be

Fabric strength is measured as a Martindale rub count (some sellers write double rubs). A machine rubs the cloth until it wears out. Higher is stronger.

UseRub count
Rarely used guest sofa15,000 rubs or less
Normal home use15,000 rubs to 25,000 rubs
Busy family with kids or pets25,000 rubs and above
Office, cafe, restaurant30,000 rubs and above

Ask the shop for the rub count in writing. If they cannot tell you, ask for a sample and rub it hard with a rough cloth for a minute; weak fabric shows pilling at once.

How Many Metres of Sofa Cloth to Buy

These are rough figures for plain fabric of about 54 inches (137 cm) width. Your upholsterer will give the exact figure after measuring the frame.

SofaPlain fabricPatterned fabric
Single seater chairAbout 4 to 5 mAbout 5 to 6 m
2 seaterAbout 6 to 7 mAbout 7 to 8 m
3 seaterAbout 8 to 9 mAbout 9 to 11 m
3+1+1 setAbout 17 to 19 mAbout 20 to 22 m
6 seater L shapeAbout 12 to 14 mAbout 14 to 16 m

Big prints and stripes need extra cloth so the pattern lines up. Buy the whole quantity from one roll, since two dye lots rarely match.

Modern Sofa Fabric Colour Combinations

Split the room by the 60 30 10 idea: sixty parts walls and floor, thirty parts sofa, ten parts cushions and decor. Choose the sofa kapda colour after you decide the wall, not before.

01

Fabric Sofa Set Designs for Everyday Use

These three use hard wearing woven fabric with stain guard, the sofa set fabric we use most for families.

Fabric sofa design in grey woven polyester with wooden legs
Seats
3+1+1
Build
Sal frame, woven poly
Fits
12 x 13 ft hall

A 3+1+1 fabric sofa set in a grey woven polyester with a fine texture. The texture hides marks and the stain guard makes chai spills easy to blot.

Maker's note: Order seat foam of 32 density HR at least, plus a rub count above 25,000 rubs.

Sofa cloth design in soft chenille on an L shape
Seats
6 seats, RHS L
Build
Pine frame, chenille
Fits
13 x 15 ft hall

Chenille on an L shape sofa: soft, plush and good at hiding wear. This sofa cloth design suits families who sit on the sofa all evening.

Maker's note: Chenille can pull threads; trim loose loops with scissors, never pull them.

Printed sofa fabric design in ikat pattern on armchairs
Seats
2 chairs
Build
Teak frame, cotton print
Fits
Any hall

Two armchairs in a printed ikat style sofa fabric design with a plain sofa. Print on chairs and plain on the sofa is the safe way to use pattern.

Maker's note: Patterned fabric needs about 1 metre extra per chair to match the print.

02

Velvet Sofa Set and Luxury Sofa Cloth Design

Velvet is the luxury sofa cloth design most readers ask about. It looks rich and feels soft, but shows pile marks and holds pet hair.

Velvet sofa set in emerald with channel tufted backs
Seats
3+2
Build
Ply frame, velvet
Fits
12 x 14 ft hall

An emerald velvet sofa set, 3+2, with channel backs. Velvet catches light so the colour changes as you walk around it.

Maker's note: Brush velvet along the pile weekly; turn seat cushions monthly to even out wear.

Velvet sofa design in blush pink with curved back
Seats
3 seats
Build
Ply frame, velvet
Fits
10 x 12 ft hall

A blush velvet sofa design with a curved back. Light velvet looks soft and luxurious, but needs a stain guard for daily use.

Maker's note: Light velvet needs a stain guard coating; it leaves the soft feel unchanged.

Luxury sofa cloth design in gold jacquard on a carved frame
Seats
3 seats
Build
Teak, jacquard
Fits
13 x 14 ft room

Gold jacquard on a carved teak frame, the luxury sofa cloth design for royal style sets. Jacquard has the pattern woven in, so it does not fade like a print.

Maker's note: Choose PU polish on carving and keep jacquard out of direct sun.

03

Linen, Cotton, Jute and Leatherette Sofa Fabric

These suit specific homes: linen and cotton for hot humid areas, jute for an earthy look, leatherette for easy wiping.

Cotton sofa set with linen blend washable covers
Seats
3+1
Build
Pine frame, linen blend
Fits
11 x 12 ft hall

A cotton sofa set with linen blend slip covers in natural oatmeal. Cotton and linen let air through on sticky days, and the covers go in the washing machine.

Maker's note: Wash covers cold and dry in shade; pre wash fabric before stitching to stop shrinking.

Jute blend sofa fabric with a coarse natural weave
Seats
3 seats
Build
Mango wood, jute blend
Fits
10 x 12 ft hall

A jute blend fabric with a coarse weave on a low 3 seater. It looks earthy and hides dust, but feels rough on bare legs.

Maker's note: Choose a jute and cotton blend; pure jute is too rough and sheds fibres.

Tan leatherette sofa set with slim metal legs
Seats
3+2
Build
Sal frame, leatherette
Fits
12 x 13 ft hall

A tan leatherette sofa set with slim metal legs. Leatherette wipes clean and suits homes with small kids, but can peel in heat and sun.

Maker's note: Ask for PU leatherette with a fabric backing; keep it away from sunny windows.

Questions buyers ask

Which sofa set cloth material lasts best in India?

For most homes, a stain guard polyester weave or chenille rated over 25,000 rubs. They hide dust, handle humidity and clean easily. Velvet suits formal rooms and linen suits hot coastal homes.

Which sofa kapda design and sofa cloth colour hide dirt best?

Mid tones hide the most: grey, taupe, olive, navy and coffee. Very light colours show stains; very dark ones show dust and lint.

Is velvet good for a sofa set in a humid city?

Polyester velvet is fine with a fan or AC. Cotton velvet can smell musty in monsoon. Brush it weekly and leave a gap from damp walls.

How do I choose a new sofa cloth design?

Decide the wall colour first, then pick a sofa fabric colour that takes 30 percent of the room. Bring home a sample, see it by day and at night, and check the rub count.

Which sofa clothes design suits homes with pets?

Tight weave polyester or a jute blend. Skip velvet and chenille since loose hair clings to them, and skip leatherette, which scratches.

Can I re-cover an old sofa with new fabric?

Yes, if the frame is solid and the joints are tight. Change the foam too, choosing HR of at least 32 density. See our sofa cover designs for a cheaper fix.
