An antique sofa set is an old or old style sofa group with a solid wood frame, hand finished carving or turning, and a shape from an earlier era, such as Victorian camel backs or traditional Indian cane and teak sets. Some are real family pieces 40 or 50 years old; most sold today are new pieces made in an antique style.
Both can last a lifetime if the wood is good. Read the restore or buy guide first, then browse the vintage, classic and traditional Indian designs below. For newer carved work see carving sofa sets, and for heavy throne styles the maharaja range.
Restore an Old Antique Sofa Set or Buy New
| Condition | Restore | Buy new |
|---|---|---|
| Solid teak, joints loose | Yes: re glue and pin joints | No need |
| Termite tunnels in legs | Only if the damage is small | If the frame is hollow |
| Polish worn, wood sound | Yes: strip and repolish | No need |
| Foam crumbling | Yes: new 32 kg/m³ HR foam | No need |
| Cracked carving | Small cracks fill well | If pieces are missing |
A sound teak frame is worth saving, because new teak is the costliest common wood. Rebuild the cushions and repolish in PU or wax. Engineered wood copies are lighter but rarely last as long.
Caring for Old Wood
- Dust with a dry cloth; damp cloth only on PU polish.
- Feed wax or oil finishes twice a year with a natural wax.
- In monsoon, keep the set off damp walls and use a dehumidifier or fan.
- Check legs for fine powder each season. It signals borers; treat at once.
- Keep out of direct sun, which dries and cracks old polish.

Antique Carved Sofa Set Designs
Old carved sets were made in teak or rosewood with joints that could be knocked apart. Look for even carving depth and pegs, not screws.

This antique teak wood sofa set has a carved vine that spans the crest then drops along each arm post. The dark wax finish shows decades of use, which is what most buyers mean by an antique sofa design.
Maker's note: For a copy, ask the carver for 8 to 10 mm deep relief on a single teak board.

Thin pale inlay lines trace the frame edges. The light pattern lifts the dark wood without full carving.
Maker's note: Shellac finish rings with water. Keep coasters on the arms and table.

Woven cane infill on back and sides keeps this old style wooden sofa set cool in summer. Loose gaddi cushions sit on a cane seat.
Maker's note: Cane sags in damp. Ask for a replaceable cane panel in a separate frame.
Vintage and Victorian Sofa Set Ideas
A vintage sofa set from the mid century has slim legs and a low back; a Victorian sofa set has a camel back, carved crest and buttoned upholstery.

The back rises in a camel curve and the buttons sit in a diamond pattern. The carved walnut frame shows above the fabric.

A low teak frame, splayed legs and mustard cushions. This vintage sofa set design suits a modern flat that wants an older feel.

One end scrolls up higher than the other like an old fainting couch. It sits under a window as a reading seat.
Maker's note: Ask for the high end at about 30 inches, so you can lean back fully.
Traditional Sofa Design in Indian Wood
A traditional Indian sofa design mixes a low wooden frame with flat arms, cane or jaali, and thick gaddi cushions. They suit homes that also use floor seating.

- Seats
- 3+1+1
- Build
- Sheesham, oil finish
- Fits
- 12 x 13 ft hall
Air flows through the cut jaali backs, which also throw patterned shade. A traditional wooden sofa set like this stays cool in hot months.
Maker's note: Jaali panels break if thin. Ask for at least 18 mm boards.

- Seats
- 3+2
- Build
- Teak, cotton gaddi
- Fits
- Courtyard room
Low seats, turned spindles and a flat top rail follow the old Kerala style. The cushions are cotton filled, not foam, for a firmer sit.
Maker's note: Cotton gaddi flattens. Ask for a foam core wrapped in cotton for a firmer seat.

- Seats
- 3+1+1
- Build
- Mango wood, painted
- Fits
- 11 x 13 ft hall
Painted flower borders on a pale wood frame give a heritage look. It works in rooms with block printed curtains or durries.
Maker's note: Ask for paint sealed with a matte clear coat so cleaning does not lift colour.
Questions buyers ask
How do I know if an antique sofa wooden set is genuinely old?
Look for hand cut joints, wooden pegs, uneven tool marks and wear on arms and legs. New copies usually have machine cut carving and screws. Even so, judge the wood and frame, not the age.
Teak, sheesham or rosewood: which suits a classical sofa set?
Teak is the top choice for its oil, termite resistance and carving. Sheesham and rosewood are also good if well seasoned. MDF should never hold load in such a frame.
Is a traditional sofa set comfortable?
Many old sets have hard seats and upright backs. Request seats 21 to 23 inches deep, HR seat foam whose density reaches at least 32 kg/m³, and a slight back tilt if you want comfort for long sitting.
Can a modern classic sofa design suit a flat?
Yes. Pick a vintage style 3+1 with slim legs and a low back, or a single Victorian chair beside a plain sofa. Large carved 3+2+1 sets need 15 ft rooms.
How do I clean an old style sofa set with cane?
Vacuum the cane with a soft brush, wipe with a lightly damp cloth and let it dry in shade. Never soak cane, and rest it away from heaters.
