Sofa Cum Bed Wooden Designs for Indian Homes

Teak, sheesham and plywood sofa beds with slat, hinge and runner checks

A sofa cum bed wooden design uses a visible lakdi frame for the arms, legs and the pull out base, so it looks like proper furniture by day and gives a firm slatted bed at night. Wood suits Indian homes that already have teak doors or a sheesham dining set.

Teak (sagwan) handles humid towns best, sheesham gives darker grain at a lower cost, and BWR plywood keeps modern box designs light. The gallery below shows twelve builds with seat count, wood and room fit, and the guide explains how to check slats, hinges and runners before you pay. For all mechanisms, see the main sofa cum bed page.

01

Pull Out Wooden Sofa Cum Bed Design

Here the seat base glides ahead on castors, then the backrest pads settle into the gap as part of the mattress. Wooden slats under the foam keep it airy and firm.

Teak wood sofa cum bed pulled out into a double bed with cream sheets
Seats
3 seater, opens 5x6
Build
Teak, cotton
Fits
Hall, 11 x 12 ft

The teak frame slides out on four wheels to make a 5x6 bed. Golden grain on the arms stays on show when the bed is open.

Maker's note: Ask for rubber rimmed wheels and a stopper so the base does not roll out by itself.

Sheesham wood sofa cum bed closed as a 3 seater with rust cushions
Seats
3 seater, opens 5x6
Build
Sheesham, chenille
Fits
Living room

Closed, nobody can tell it opens. Dark sheesham arms and rust cushions suit a hall with wooden furniture.

Maker's note: Seasoned sheesham only; ask how many months the planks were dried before cutting.

Solid wood sofa cum bed half pulled out showing wooden slats
Seats
3 seater, opens 6x6
Build
Solid wood, slats
Fits
Guest room

Half open, you can see the slats that hold the mattress. Twelve or more slats, each about 3 inches wide, keep the bed from sagging.

Maker's note: Slat gaps should be under 2 inches, and each slat screwed, not just nailed.

02

Wooden Sofa Cum Bed with Storage

A box under the seat holds quilts and pillows so the bed is made in minutes. Storage adds a few inches of depth, so measure again.

Seats
3 seater, storage
Build
Teak frame, ply box
Fits
Hall, 11 x 12 ft

The seat lifts on gas struts to show a deep box. Quilts stay inside even when the bed is closed for weeks.

Maker's note: Line the box with laminate and drill small vent holes so damp does not build in monsoon.

Sheesham sofa cum bed with two front drawers and cream cushions
Seats
3 seater, 2 drawers
Build
Sheesham, cotton
Fits
Living room

Two drawers under the seat open from the front, so bedding comes out even with the bed open. Brass knobs suit a classic hall.

Maker's note: Ask for metal drawer channels; wood on wood runners swell and stick in humid months.

Wooden sofa cum bed 6*6 with storage under a walnut finish frame
Seats
3 seater, opens 6x6
Build
Mango wood, PU
Fits
Hall, 12 x 13 ft

A 6*6 bed with a full length box below for two sets of bedding. The walnut finish hides scratches from daily opening.

Maker's note: Mango wood must be treated against borers; ask for the treatment before polish.

03

Solid Wood vs Plywood Sofa Cum Bed

Solid wood lasts longer and can be repolished. Good plywood costs less and suits flat modern lines. Here are both side by side.

Teakwood sofa cum bed with lightly carved arm panels and maroon seats
Seats
3 seater, opens 5x6
Build
Teak, chenille
Fits
Drawing room

Shallow carving on the arm panels gives a traditional look while the pull out base stays plain. Maroon cushions hide wear.

Maker's note: Keep carving shallow and only on arm panels; it collects less dust and costs fewer hours.

Plywood sofa come bed design in white laminate with blue cushions
Seats
3 seater, opens 5x6
Build
BWR ply, laminate
Fits
Modern flat

A clean box built from BWR plywood with white laminate. It opens on steel runners and suits modern flats with white walls.

Maker's note: Insist on BWR or BWP plywood, edge banding on all cut edges and steel runners.

Sofa cum bed design wooden look: oak veneer over plywood with oatmeal cushions
Seats
2 seater, opens 4x6
Build
Ply, oak veneer
Fits
Study or kids room

Oak style veneer over plywood gives the look of solid wood at a lower cost. Without a PU coat, the veneer marks easily from wet glasses.

Maker's note: Ask for PU matte polish on veneer and solid wood strips on the front edges.

04

Compact Wooden Bed Cum Sofa for Small Rooms

These fold or slide into small footprints for studies, kids rooms and one room flats.

Wooden foldable sofa cum bed with a futon mattress in grey
Seats
2 seater, opens 4x6
Build
Rubberwood, futon
Fits
Studio flat

A slatted wooden frame folds from sofa to bed in two moves. The futon mattress lifts off for airing in the sun.

Maker's note: Rubberwood needs anti borer treatment; check that the hinge bolts have lock nuts.

Single wooden sofa cum bed with teak arms and mustard cushion
Seats
1 seater, opens 3x6
Build
Teak, cotton
Fits
Study corner

A one seat chair that pulls out to a 3x6 bed. Teak arms make it sturdy enough for daily use in a study.

Maker's note: Ask for a centre support leg on the pull out section; single beds flex in the middle.

Wooden diwan style bed cum sofa with bolsters in a small room
Seats
Seats 3, single bed
Build
Sheesham, cotton
Fits
One room flat

A low wooden diwan with bolsters doubles as a single bed. Storage below holds bedding, so it suits a one room flat.

Maker's note: Keep the diwan height about 16 to 17 inches so it works as both seat and bed.

How to Check Slats, Hinges and Runners

  • Slats: at least 12 for a 5x6 bed, about 3 inches wide, gaps under 2 inches, screwed into a side rail.
  • Runners and wheels: steel runners or rubber rimmed wheels; pull the base out and back ten times in the shop.
  • Hinges: on fold types, steel hinges with lock nuts, not small screws into plywood edges.
  • Joints: rails locked by mortise and tenon or hardwood dowels, glued corner blocks behind each leg.
  • Polish: PU for daily use; oil or wax if you like touching up yourself.

Then lie on it. You should not feel any rail or gap through the foam.

Questions buyers ask

Is a sofa cum bed in wood better than a metal one?

Wood is quieter, looks like furniture and can be repolished. Metal is lighter and cheaper. For daily sleeping, a solid wood frame with slats is the most comfortable.

Which is best: teak wood sofa cum bed or sheesham?

Teak handles damp and termites better and costs more. Sheesham gives dark streaks and great hardness, provided the planks were dried properly. Both last for many years with care.

Is a sofa cum bed plywood frame strong?

Yes, provided the sheet is boiling water resistant (BWR) or BWP grade, 18 to 19 mm thick, with solid wood corner blocks and steel runners. Avoid MDF for any part that carries weight.

What size wooden sofa cum bed should I order?

For two adults, 6x6; for a couple sleeping close, 5x6; for one guest, 3x6 or 4x6. Check the size guide for closed and open dimensions.

What upkeep does a wooden sofa cum bed need?

Dust the frame with soft dry cotton, park it two or three inches clear of any damp wall, shield it from harsh sun, and open it monthly so slats and foam breathe.

What makes one wooden sofa cum bed design cost more than another?

Solid teak over sheesham or plywood, hand carving, storage boxes, steel runners and denser foam all raise the cost.
