A good sofa side table design starts with one number: the top should sit within about 2 inches of your sofa arm height, so a cup lands without reaching up or down. Most Indian sofa arms are 22 to 26 inches high, so most side tables we make are 20 to 26 inches tall.
Below are nine designs in three families: solid wood tables that stand beside the arm, C shaped tables that slide under the seat, and corner tables that fill the gap where two sofas meet. Every tile notes wood, size and best room; screenshot the one you like for your carpenter.
If you are still choosing the sofa itself, see our living room sofa ideas first, then come back and size the table to the arm.
Wooden Side Table for Sofa Set
Solid wood tables last decades and match a wooden or fabric sofa set. Sheesham and teak take PU polish well; mango wood is the lighter budget pick for a sofa set side table.

- Seats
- Pair for 3+1+1 set
- Build
- Sheesham, matte PU
- Fits
- 12 x 14 ft hall
A square sheesham top of 18 x 18 inches with one drawer for remotes and coasters. The dark streaky grain sits well next to a light fabric sofa.
Maker's note: Insist the drawer box is dovetailed or dowelled, running on soft close slides; nailed boxes loosen in two monsoons.

- Seats
- Fits any arm 22 to 24 in
- Build
- Teak, natural oil
- Fits
- Family hall
A 20 inch round teak top on a turned pedestal. No corners to bump into, which suits homes with small children running around the sofa.
Maker's note: Order the base 2 inches wider than half the top so the table does not tip when leaned on.

- Seats
- Beside 2 or 3 seater
- Build
- Mango wood, cane shelf
- Fits
- Compact flat
Two tiers: the top for tea, the lower cane shelf for newspapers folded flat. Mango wood keeps it light enough to lift with one arm.
Maker's note: Ask the carpenter to treat mango wood against borers and seal the cane edge with a wood beading.
C Shaped Side Table Designs
A C shaped side table has a base that slides under the sofa seat so the top hovers over your lap. It needs about 4 inches of clear space under the sofa, so check leg height before you order.

- Seats
- Slides under any seat
- Build
- MS frame, oak veneer
- Fits
- Work from home
A 16 x 12 inch oak top on a black powder coated steel frame. It works as a laptop rest or a tea table for people who eat on the sofa.
Maker's note: Keep the top 1 to 2 inches above seat height plus 8 inches, so a laptop sits at elbow level.

- Seats
- Beside 3 seater arm
- Build
- Ply top, brass finish
- Fits
- Drawing room
A walnut finish top on a brass tone base, made for a velvet or leather sofa in a formal drawing room. It looks slim and leaves the floor visible.
Maker's note: Ask for felt pads under the base so the metal does not scratch marble or the sofa leg.

- Seats
- Fits sofa legs 4 in+
- Build
- Rubberwood, matte PU
- Fits
- Living room
An all wood C table in rubberwood with a natural matte finish. Wood feels warmer than steel and suits a Kerala style or Scandinavian look.
Maker's note: Rubberwood must be borer treated; ask for the treatment and keep the base board at least 2 inches thick.
Corner Table for Sofa Set
When a 3 seater and a 2 seater meet at a right angle, the corner gap is about 20 to 24 inches square. A corner table fills it and holds a lamp, so you need no extra light point in the middle of the hall.

- Seats
- Between 3 and 2 seater
- Build
- Sheesham, walnut PU
- Fits
- 14 x 16 ft hall
A 22 inch square corner table with a lower shelf, set where a 3 seater meets a 2 seater. The lamp lights both seats at once.
Maker's note: Measure the gap after placing both sofas; order the table 1 inch smaller than the gap on each side.

- Seats
- Corner of L or 3+2
- Build
- Teak frame, 8 mm glass
- Fits
- Medium hall
A quarter round shape follows the curve of the walkway, so no sharp corner sticks out. The toughened glass top shows the wood frame below.
Maker's note: Ask for 8 mm toughened glass with polished edges and rubber stops at each support point.

- Seats
- Corner of sofa set
- Build
- BWR ply, rattan door
- Fits
- Joint family home
This corner table hides a closed cabinet with a rattan door for board games, chargers and spare coasters. It stays dust free in dusty months.
Maker's note: Use BWR grade ply for the carcass and a teak or laminate top so tea rings wipe off.
Sofa Side Table Design Height Guide by Arm
Measure from the floor to the top of your sofa arm, then pick the table from this list. Within 2 inches above or below the arm is the comfortable zone.
| Sofa arm height | Side table height | Top size |
|---|---|---|
| 20 to 22 in (low modern sofa) | 19 to 22 in | 16 to 18 in square |
| 22 to 24 in (most fabric sofas) | 21 to 24 in | 18 to 20 in square or round |
| 24 to 26 in (wooden sofa, rolled arm) | 23 to 26 in | 20 to 22 in |
| Armless or very low arm | Seat height plus 6 to 8 in | 14 to 18 in |
C shaped tables follow a different rule: the top sits over the seat, so make it seat height plus 8 to 10 inches. Seat height on most sofas is 16 to 19 inches.
Matching a Living Room Sofa Side Table to the Set
- Depth: keep the table no deeper than the sofa, usually 32 to 38 inches, so it does not poke into the walkway.
- Wood: pick the same wood or a darker one than the sofa frame. Mixing two mid browns looks like a mistake.
- Gap: leave 2 to 3 inches between table and arm so cushions can be pulled out for cleaning.
- Walkway: keep 30 to 36 inches clear past the table to the door.
- Pairing with the centre table: the side table can be a little taller than the centre table. See our sofa centre table designs for sizes.
For tiny halls, one C table often does the work of two side tables. Our small living room sofa page shows layouts.
Questions buyers ask
What is the right height for a sofa side table for living room use?
Match it to the arm, not the seat. If the arm is 24 inches, a 22 to 26 inch table works. Most living room side tables end up between 20 and 26 inches tall.
Which sofa side table design latest styles are popular right now?
C shaped tables with metal frames, round pedestal tables in solid wood, and two tier tables with cane shelves are asked for most this season. Fluted wood fronts and stone look tops are also in demand.
Do I need a side table for sofa set on both sides?
Not always. A 3+1+1 set looks balanced with one table between the 3 seater and each chair. In a small hall, one table at the end people use most is enough.
Is a glass top or a wood top better?
Wood is warmer and quieter when you set down a cup. Glass shows dust and fingerprints but makes a small room look bigger. If you pick glass, ask for 8 mm toughened glass.
Can a living room sofa side table hold a lamp?
Yes, if the top is at least 18 inches across and the base is heavy. Ask the electrician for a socket at skirting level behind the table, so the wire does not cross the floor.
What makes one side table cost more than another?
Solid teak or sheesham costs more than mango wood or ply. Drawers with good runners, hand carving, brass fittings and toughened glass also add to the cost.
